7.2-magnitude earthquake strikes off Japan’s coast, triggers tsunami alert
TOKYO — A robust earthquake struck off the coast of northern Japan on Monday, triggering a tsunami alert, the Japanese Meteorological Agency stated.
The company stated the magnitude 7.2 quake struck off the coast of Hokkaido, close to the coastal metropolis of Aomori with an epicenter about 50 kilometers (about 30 miles) under the ocean floor.

It issued an alert within the area for a tsunami of as much as 3 meters (as much as 10 toes).
Nuclear energy crops within the area had been conducting security checks, public broadcaster NHK reported.
