A gaggle of greater than 4,500 residents of Venice chipped in to purchase a “haunted” island that after housed an asylum and a hospital for quarantined plague victims — to maintain vacationers away.

The native buyers at the moment are resulting from take over the 18.5-acre island of Poveglia on Aug. 1 with a 99-year lease that may flip it into an city park for Venetians that’s strictly off limits to foreigners visiting the historic metropolis, in line with a report by CNN.

The spooky island sits on the southern finish of the Venice lagoon.
