Decades-old thriller of elusive ‘sword dragon’ skeleton lastly solved: scientists
Paleontologists have lastly solved the thriller behind an elusive “sword dragon” skeleton discovered on the UK’s Jurassic Coast.
In an Oct. 10 press launch from the University of Manchester, officers stated the skeleton — discovered close to Dorset’s Gold Cap in 2001 — is a newly recognized species of ichthyosaur.
Alive across the similar time as dinosaurs, ichthyosaurs had been air-breathing marine reptiles that when “ruled the ancient oceans,” per officers.
The historical reptile has been named Xiphodracon goldencapensis, or the “Sword Dragon of Dorset.” Scientists say it dates again to the Pliensbachian interval, roughly 193 to 184 million years in the past.
