Pope Leo XIV visited a historic mosque in Turkey throughout his first overseas journey — and though he typically took off his sneakers, the pontiff declined to affix in prayer, based on studies.

The Chicago-born chief of the Catholic Church attended Istanbul’s Blue Mosque on Saturday — with the Holy Father eradicating his footwear as an indication of respect to the enduring home of worship, which requires the removing of sneakers by all guests.

Then touring the mosque in simply his white gown socks, Pope Leo XIV didn’t seem to have interaction in prayer.
