An opportunity discovery of a 25-million-year-old fossil on an Australian seaside has allowed paleontologists to establish a uncommon, solely new species that would unlock mysteries of whale evolution.
Researchers this week formally named Janjucetus dullardi, a cartoonish creature with bulging eyes the scale of tennis balls, within the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society.
Unlike immediately’s whales, the juvenile specimen was sufficiently small to slot in a single mattress.
