The U.S. Embassy in Guatemala has issued a safety alert warning Americans to make use of “increased caution” when within the Central American nation.

“The U.S. Embassy has lifted the shelter-in-place order for their staff,” says the alert, which was issued Sunday. “The situation remains tense with coordinated, armed attacks on police in several zones of Guatemala City.”

The Embassy recommends that Americans monitor native media for updates, keep away from crowds and demonstrations, and goal to maintain a “low profile.”

Travelers are suggested to assessment private safety plans and reduce pointless actions.
